Spring 2024 Honors and Graduate Student Writing Exercise

Instructions

 You are responsible for reading the entire book The Women who Professionalized Interior
Design, which can be found in the Assignments folder on Canvas. There are 7 questions based
upon the reading. Everyone starts with 1 point; each question then is worth 2 points, bringing
the maximum total to 15 points, as noted in the syllabus.

Several of the questions will require you to familiarize yourself with this house.
 When you are ready to answer a question, start typing next to the arrow beneath the question.
Do not change the font or line spacing: just begin typing!
 Follow the directions. Write exactly the number of lines of text requested – no more and no less.
Note that it is the number of lines of text that are specified, not the number of sentences. For
instance, this bullet point has 4 lines of text. This will force you to prioritize what you write
about, which will help you form well-organized, well-written, and tightly focused answers.
 In your answers, whenever you refer to something in the book, there is no need to use quotes
or footnotes. Because there is only one source – the book – I will understand what you refer to
in your answers. However, do not quote passages written by the book’s author, Peter Dedek.
Your answers should be in your own words.
 Make certain that you use Word’s Editor feature to review spelling and grammar because a
grade of zero will be given to an answer that contains any errors. Save your completed writing
exercise as a Word document – not a PDF – and then upload it to Canvas by the April 11
deadline, which is listed in the syllabus.
 At the end of the day, instead of having you write a research paper, I am testing you to see if
you can write seven excellent, focused, error-free answers. Think of this writing exercise as
creating seven perfect little jewels of writing!

Question 1: Issues regarding the licensure of architects versus interior designers are discussed in the
book. Write an argument from the viewpoint of an architect who feels that because interior design is a
“non-technical” field, licensure and regulation of who can practice interior design is not needed. In your
argument, expound upon the differences in architectural and interior design pedagogy here at UTA to
support your argument. Write 10 lines of text. Then take the opposite approach and argue why licensure
and regulation of who can practice interior design is needed, writing an additional 10 lines of text.

ask your interviewee? You may have to do a bit of research to prepare for your interview, and a good
place to start would be the bibliography that the author provides after each of the book’s chapters.

After reading this book, which do you think is greater: the power of architecture or the power of interior
design to impact how people behave? In other words, in your daily life, is your behavior more impacted
