Literature Review and Position Paper (10-15 pages)
A literature review and position essay is an objective, critical summary of published literature
relevant to a debatable topic. Its purpose is to create familiarity with current thinking and
research on a particular topic by presenting opposite or different views and based on it take a
position on the topic and justify it. There is no right or wrong here. Your role is to present well
both sides of an issue objectively before taking a side.
– Choose 3 topics from the attached list (or add your own topic of interest). I will assign you
one of your preferred topics.
– You must use at least 6 articles/papers for your review (you can include more).
– Write your reviews following the structure below (suggested structure you can do it
differently)
– Prepare a 20-minute presentation to share with the class your review findings and
conclusions.
Your paper should be structured as follows:
ABSTRACT (1 page)
Though it can vary by discipline, an abstract is a short summary of a larger work for the purpose of
condensing the argument, conclusions, and/or results into a paragraph.
An abstract in the social sciences may contain the scope, purpose, results, and main content of the
larger work, whereas an abstract in the humanities may contain the thesis, background, and
conclusion of the larger work. In any discipline, an abstract does not evaluate the original work, it
summarizes it.
When writing your abstract, you should:
• Provide a full citation of the source
• Put the most important information first (the thesis or results)
• Use key words from the original work (but do not define or explain)
• Use concise, clear language
1. Introduction (1-2)
A concise definition of a topic under consideration (this may be a descriptive or
argumentative thesis, or proposal) and why it is important. Also scope of the
related literature being revied should be presented and how why these specific
articles sources were used.
2. Main Body (4-6)
There are many ways to organize the evaluation of the sources. Chronological and
thematic approaches
are each useful examples.
Each work should be critically summarized and evaluated for its premise,
methodology, and conclusion. It is as important to address inconsistencies,
omissions, and errors, as it is to identify accuracy, depth, and relevance.
Use logical connections and transitions to connect sources.
3. Conclusion and position (2-3)
The conclusion summarizes the key findings of the review in general terms.
Notable commonalities between works, whether favorable or not, may be
included here.
State your position on the issue and explain it.
In what way presenting both sides changed your view or added to you
understanding of the “other side”
4. References (at least 6 different sources/articles/news stories etc.)
