Paper 1: Choose Your Own Case Study

Background

In class, we have been discussing the stakeholders involved in the sports and media relationship. We have talked about their motivations (money being the major player here) and the issues associated with being involved in big-time sports. For this assignment, you will conduct a short case study on a major sports event or contract deal (organization or player) of your choosing. The goal is to grasp the process that stakeholders go through in these scenarios and to understand the lasting effects that result long after the event occurs or the ink has dried. The case should be recent enough so that you can speak to what other outcomes might happen in the future based on the data and sources you examine.

Appropriate Cases (you are encouraged to choose your own):

  • 2016 NFL Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant stadium deal
  • 2022 Beijing Olympics
  • 2020 Giannis Antetokounmpo’s NBA contract
  • 2021 Lionel Messi’s Departure from Barcelona & New Contract with PSG
  • 2021 Crypto.com Arena stadium deal

Task

Your case study will involve a description and analysis of a major sports event or contract deal. It should include the following:

1) Identification – describe the event or contract and the relevant stakeholders (organizations, groups, people)

2) Analysis – explain the stakeholders’ perspectives and their interests/motivations

3) Forecast – create a forecast of the long-term outcomes and effects

Expectations

Be specific – Find sources that provide detailed information about your case and attribute them appropriately. Include a reference list of those sources at the end of your paper.

Write well – Clear, concise writing and good grammar will take you far.
