Review the Hodder reading on the roles of women and men at the
Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük (I’ve attached the reading in email)
Next, have a look at the comic-version of the goddess controversy
that Hodder’s team created. (check the pdf attached)
Now that you are familiar with the site and the debate, write a 500-
word paper answering the following question:
James Mellaart found the goddess figurine in a grain bin in his 1960s
excavations, which led to many new-age goddess worshipers
adopting Çatalhöyük as an example of a place where early goddess-
worshipping farmers lived in matriarchal social structures. How has
Ian Hodder worked with, and against, such interpretations, using the
ongoing excavations at the site and the data that are being recovered
there? What pieces of evidence have been key for Hodder in
discussing male-female relationships and gender ideology at
Çatalhöyük?
