SOLVED ASSIGNMENT Kingston, No Name Woman
1. Compare the story about Kingston’s aunt told by Kingston’s mother, to the stories Kingston herself tells. How are they different?
2. “You must not tell anyone … what I am about to tell you,” Kingston’s mother tells her at the essay’s opening. The rest of the essay, of course, is Kingston doing just that. What might her purpose be? Rhetorically (the writer’s arrangement of the material), what is the effect of this strategy on the reader?
3.There seems to be an implicit critique of patriarchy in this essay. Compare and contrast the way males and females are portrayed.
4. The author seems much conflicted between what she might call her “American self,” and her identity as a traditional Chinese female that she has inherited from her immigrant family who came from the Mainland. Where do you find this contrasted in the essay?
5. Why do you think the author felt compelled to write the essay?
