THIS IS A SAMPLE PROMPT AND OUTLINE. THIS IS NOT YOUR PROMPT.

Writing Prompt: Write an essay where you provide an argument FOR or AGAINST the presence of cell phones in our society. You must provide textual evidence with citations to strengthen your position.

Introduction Paragraph

Background Information on the topic: Cell phones are portable devices that can be used to make audio and video phone calls. In addition, with today’s technological advancement, individuals have a wealth of information available anytime, day or night. There is also the ability to notify someone in case there is an emergency.

Thesis Statement (Must identify your position and arguments that support it): Cell phones are beneficial in everyone’s lives because it allows loved ones to communicate with their families more often, can be used to educate oneself, and allows individuals to reach someone in case of an emergency.

Body Paragraph #1

General statement on the first argument: Cell phones allow individuals to communicate with each other from opposite ends of the world.

Evidence (from the reading or research) that supports your thesis statement: “Now, instead of waiting months for a letter to arrive or hoping someone is home at the right time to give them a call, we can reach each other instantly and juggle multiple conversations at once.” (Gendy, “Cell Phones Bring Us Closer together, Not Further Apart.”)

Body Paragraph #2

General statement on the second argument: People who have a cell phone have the ability to look for up-to-date information anytime compared to the past.

Evidence (from the reading or research) that supports your thesis statement “This is due to the benefits of mobile learning, including the ability to share knowledge without any limits in space and time, the capacity to facilitate the development of critical thinking, participatory learning, problem-solving, and the development of lifelong communication skills.” (Abidin and Tho, 2018)

Body Paragraph #3

General statement on the third argument: With cell phones being so portable, people carry it on them at all times and can be useful, especially during emergencies.

Evidence (from the reading or research) that supports your thesis statement “Perhaps the greatest benefit to owning a cell phone is the security of knowing that they can call for assistance anytime or anywhere they need too. In past decades, millions of people were stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere because their car broke down. Not being able to get help and having to rely on the kindness of strangers who passed by. It was not only frustrating it was also very dangerous. (Plaza, “Cell Phones Give You So Many Benefits For Communication”)

Conclusion:

Restate thesis statement in a different way from introduction paragraph Without cell phones, it would be impossible to communicate with one’s family on a regular basis, search for information that is current, and have the ability to contact someone if there is some type of emergency where one needs help.

Provide a reflection on the subject (an insight) Now, cell phones are crucial to our everyday lives and it is hard to imagine how one can go without it.
